I decided to get 2 tomato plants this year – kind of a science experiment. 🙂 I put them in the ground and the plants were barely growing. I thought that maybe our soil here was just without any nutrients as nothing is ever done with the yard except cutting the grass. I added some liquid fertilizer which helped for a while.
I found Back To The Roots Organic Potting Mix here on Amazon and decided to try it. All I could do was very gently turn about 1″ of soil on top and then add the potting mix. In 3 days both plants had grown about a foot and blooms started to appear. I added more about 2 months later and the plants are over 4 ft. tall now. Sadly, I’ve only had 4 tomatoes produced from the blooms. But, you can bet that next year my “science experiment” will include deeply tilling/turning the soil with Back To The Roots Organic Potting Mix. I will also add whatever other nutrients are needed for tomato plants.

***HERE’S MY UPDATE: About a month later and I saw some new growth on the seedlings! I’m pleasantly surprised. It still doesn’t have a smell and I didn’t notice any gnats or anything. I will also say my kids played in it like it was regular dirt. Definitely not for outdoor use. I forgot it was only meant for indoors and put my planter outside and they were dead the next day, but that was completely user error. If you want indoor plants, this stuff is for sure worth a shot. Pics are before transferring to this new potting mix and a few weeks later.
My first impressions are not great and I will update if anything changes. Upon opening the bag, it doesn’t look like soil. At all. It looks like someone kept all their cat’s hair balls and tricked people into thinking it’s dirt. I didn’t like touching it either; it was dry and fuzzy, like felt. I am extremely skeptical about the effectiveness of this stuff but keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t kill my kids’ seedlings. I will say that it doesn’t have a scent which is nice and seems to hold quite a lot of water while also draining enough that the plants don’t drown.
Too honest –
I ordered this to plant some seeds in pots. It looks and feels like a good product. They sent a ton of it, and and the price was super low. So I’d say I’m satisfied.

I bought this to help my indoor sunflowers thrive. I started growing them earlier in the year for my kids when their school plants died. We’re in NYC and had originally used wild dirt. In short NYC plants is pretty darn hardy considering the fact our dirt doesn’t hold moisture well. I had to essentially water our sunflowers daily in the wild dirt.
Cut to this bag of indoor soil, it’s holding up well. It came to me premoistened with no pebbles and debris. It does have some tiny wood chips or sticks but it’s not a big deal considering this is far better than NYC wild dirt.
My sunflowers have been thriving. I don’t have to water any where as frequently and I didn’t have to enrich the soil as much as I did with the wild.
Wild NYC dirt needed so much work to be ok for the sunflowers. I fertilized the soil, added dehydrated fish and spent coffee beans to help enrich the soil for the flowers. I didn’t do anything with this brand of soil much to my delight.
It’s working well for my needs and will reorder should I want to start growing other indoor plants.

I transplanted my store bought herb plants and used this soil, my basil has grown a lot this past week and has gotten darker green, the plant seems to be doing very well now. The Rosemary is growing well too, gained some length on the branches.
I also planted some chive seeds in a pot and two containers of cat grass, I can’t wait to see how quickly it sprouts because the soil is very rich so I’m sure they will do well.
With what it has done for my store bought herbs, I couldn’t be happier and I can wait to see how well it does with seeds.
The price is very good for the amount that I got, I was able to transplant two herb plants and start three more pots from seeds. I also love that the soil is not really dense too, it is actually just right for my window planters.

I received a lovely succulent from a coworker as a birthday gift and after having it at my desk for a few weeks, I knew it was time to repot it. I don’t have a green thumb at all and have unintentionally killed a variety of plants, including succulents.
I really appreciate this gift though so I decided to do what I could to give it a chance to thrive. I looked through a few brands but decided on this one since it was a decent amount for only $10.
I didn’t notice any bad smells. You can definitely feel the sand mixed in the soil. And the soil was a bit damp, which I appreciate since I like to think the moisture will be enough to keep the succulent alive while the soil settles. (Not sure if this check out lol. But I’m a serial overwaterer so I don’t want to risk drowning it).
There is tree bark mixed in this soil and the only thing I found annoying was that there was quite a bit of large pieces that I had to pick out since my containers were too small. This shouldn’t be an issue with larger pots but it was a hassle for the mini ones.
The soil can also be packed quite a bit. It took me a while to have enough around the stem of my succulent to keep it steady and standing alone. Same thing with the leaf propagations.
I will update my review as time passes to see how the plants hold out.

It is ok, but seems to either have, or attract gnats. It’s ok, but I will not order more.
